The MSC Cross-Country Course provides a week of fun flying including dual- and solo cross-country flights, to assist you to make the transition to regular cross-country flying.
To participate in the course, you'll need a letter from your CFI giving an assurance that in his opinion you are capable of planning and carrying out a safe paddock landing; this doesn't mean you have already landed out, rather it assures us that you have been trained to make a safe landing if necessary. Remember, once you're flying cross-country, an outlanding is always possible.
The course consists of a mixture of lectures (usually in the morning), followed by a briefing for the day's task. Tasks are flown by everyone...some in two-seaters, some in single seaters. In the evenings, there is a chance of a de-brief and discussion over a drink and dinner (full catering is provided, so you don't have to leave the airfield to eat; that maximises the time for talking about what we've learnt during the day).
You'll need to ask your club to hire you a single seater. Some clubs are able to hire us two-seat gliders and experienced instructors who can teach cross-country flying.
Likely, you'll fly alternate days dual and solo. In either case, there will be a group of gliders flying together around the task, so we can share our experience of the day afterwards...this really helps you to learn how to observe the sky and make decisions that lead to successful completion of the task.
There may be outlandings! If the weather is not suitable for cross-country flying, we can set up a Toi Toi fence, and you'll practice managing approaches and short landings over an obstacle.
We look forward to your application; numbers may be limited by the available two-seater glider and Instructor resources. It takes a bit of time to organise the resources, so applications close 30 November.
