XCountry Course Nov 2016

Dates

Mon 21st Nov to Fri 25th November 2016

Course Objectives

Our intention is to provide opportunities for pilots who are "ready", and to provide the training, opportunity and confidence that leads those pilots to undertake cross-country flights.

You'll need a recommendation from your CFI, who will need to assure us that you have the skills required to land in a paddock if required.  This doesn't mean you will, it just means that you have the necessary flying skills to achieve a safe, short landing.  We'll be delivering a session on paddock selection at the start of the course, using lots of photos taken in the area around Matamata that you'll be flying over, and the presentation will be assisted by pilots who have multiple outlandings in their log books, and this will set you up to succeed if an outlanding is required.

After that, we'll spend the week with lectures, morning briefings, and a mixture of dual and solo cross-country flying, with a de-brief after the days flying.   Our intention with the flying activities is to expose you to the cross-country flying behaviour of experienced pilots, and to share the sky with the others on the course flying their single seaters, while flying some cross-country flights with a high probability of completion.  By alternating solo- and dual-flying days, and flying cross-country most days, you will rapidly develop a new level of skill and confidence.  Our experienced instructors will assist you to improve both your technical skills, and your "meteorological navigation" a.k.a figuring out which way to go next to reach the turnpoint.

What to bring

Each pilot is asked to bring a single-seat sailplane; it's perfectly aceptable for 2 pilots to share a club machine.  We may ask your Club to provide a two-seater, and possibly an instructor, depending on numbers.  You'll need a tow vehicle, evidence of 3rd-party insurance, and a parachute with a valid repack signature.  You won't need to bring crew, we'll take care of each other...landouts will be few!

Accommodation and meals

Traditionally, visitors stay on the airfield, using the bunkhouse owned and operated by the Matamata Soaring Centre.  We expect to provide full catering at reasonable cost.  Because we all eat together, the opportunities for sharing your experience are maximised, and this contributes to your progress.  Likely you'll be tired after an intense day, so early nights are good...and this is easily achieved when shower and bed are only a short walk away.  Join us!
