2012 Nationals Underway

The 2012 Nationals are underway, with an interesting practice day yesterday. We have a good number of gliders flying this year with 25 entrants. Even the weather looks like it's not going to be raining for the week and a half which is a very nice change.

Practice day was good up north, although a little soft and challenging down south. Excellent climbs over the swamp as usual. Most did half the task and turned back early to avoid an exhausitng landout on the first day. Most except for Bill in his LAK however, who chose some lovely huge paddocks down Mangakino way to hang out in.

Today looks a little less exciting than we might have hoped for, however there might be some ridge with about 15 knots westerlies, so a task may well be possible.

All the results will be going on the Soaring Spot Website available at:
http://www.soaringspot.com/nzmnc2012/

For XCountry course details see here

Early bird pricing for the contest is available for entries in before 1st November, so enter early to save!

We also have the Kaimai Challenge on this weekend, so if you haven't done it yet, get in touch with an instructor, book a twin or a single, and plan to give it a go. It's quite acheiveable in either thermal or ridge conditions, and we may well have some westerlies this weekend.

3rd Kaimai Challenge Weekend

This weekend is the third Kaimai Challenge weekend, but the weather is not looking conducive to good ridge flying at all!

Today looks blue and stable, while tomorrow looks like rain and drizzle for most of the day.

This coming Wednesday may turn into a ridge day, so perhaps plan for that if you're keen. Here's the rain prediction for tommorrow around noon:

First Kaimai Speed Challenge Day

Welcome to the new Matamata Soaring Centre Blog. If you're a member of Piako, Taupo, Tauranga, Hauraki, Aviation Sports, Whangarei or Auckland gliding clubs, you're a member of the MSC.

The goal of this site and blog is to post news and info that applies to members from all these clubs.

To start with we have a brief report on the first Kaimai Speed Challenge day, which was Sunday 14th August. After the weather forecasts earlier in the week, it was much to the surprise of most people that the weather actually turned out to be a stonking good ridge day.

Our intrepid organiser has his own blog and review of the day posted here with some pics, congrats to David for winning the day!
http://discuscs.blogspot.com/2011/08/sunday-in-review.html

A couple of things to note about the challenge:

The contest is as open as possible. You can fly any day, in any glider, any time, in any weather, with as much or as little water as possible.

On our designated racing days, we also have a day winner.

All the latest scores can be seen on the Kamai Speed Challenge page:
http://msc.gliding.co.nz/kaimai-speed-challenge/

The next challenge day is next weekend, the 28th of August. We'll announce a day or two in advance if it's likely to go ahead. Keep in mind we can also do the task if it's a thermal day, which are starting to become more common.

Never done a task before? Then this is the contest for you. Line up an instructor and a twin, and get ready for a good ridge day.

	See you out there!

Advanced Cross Country Course 2011

	This is forward notice.

The MSC is intending to hold an Racing Technique and Advanced Cross Country Course again this year (running concurrent with the usual Cross Country Course). Nov 21st to 25th 2011.

We are endeavoring to engage a recognised international competitor or instructor for the week. Entry is invited from pilots who have competed in sanctioned gliding competitions. Each pilot should have at their disposal a suitable glider and hold a suitable level of proficiency. We may move to another site to launch during the week.

Acceptance on this course is not automatic. Of course further details, including cost will be supplied later when arrangements are finalised.

Please send you expressions of interest to wajvmace@ihug.co.nz. Subject - Advanced X Country so we know the likely numbers we are dealing with.

First attempts at Kaimai Speed Challenge

Tim and Bill have given the Kaimai Speed Challenge a test run, with mixed results. The day was a bit unusual with lower level winds not lasting long during the day. Bill had a couple of goes, and the first was a lot quicker. Tim managed to land out in Te Aroha racecourse. Full stories available here for Bill, and here for Tim's landout.

Announcing The Great Kaimai Speed Challenge

The Kaimai Speed Challenge has been designed as a fun, friendly competition that is easy for anyone to participate in. Everything has been made as simple as possible. Any glider is welcome to enter. There is only one task. The start, finish and turn points are easily identifiable so you don't need a GPS. The weather doesn't need to be perfect as we use the main part of the ridge.

What are the goals? To encourage new pilots to try a task for the first time, perhaps in a twin with an instructor. To allow experienced pilots to improve their racing skills. Pilots can practice using loggers and GPS devices. But primarily the goal is to have fun, safely, with as few hassles as possible.

The challenge has been designed by David Jensen with help from Tim Bromhead and Edouard Devenoges, and the support of the Matamata Soaring Centre. Edouard will be the official scorer, and the new Matamata Soaring Website will be the official website of the challenge.

See the challenge webpage for full details.
