From Derry Belcher, the original designer:

“The M represents the Kaimai range of hills or if you wish, a mountain wave, or if you really squint it is a seagull (representing free flight or some such thing).

The S is representative of the Waitoa river (or Waihou) which lead to Matamata but also can be seen as the path to freedom ending at the glider.

The C, together with the S form a plinth or stand for the glider. (Now isn’t that creative thinking?!!)

Finally, it has a Japanese-like form to it – this could be the Che Feng (or whatever you call it) soothing aspect… Just kidding, - I’ve put my glasses back on

Extract from the MSC Constitution

MATAMATA SOARING CENTRE INCORPORATED

3. The objects for which the Association is established are:-

(a) To provide airfields and the facilities for the furtherance and greater enjoyment of gliding and other flying in New Zealand.

(b) To organise, promote, encourage, run and conduct flying meetings, camps, instructional courses, pageants, displays, contests and occasions when flying is to be done in the vicinity of the airfield or other facilities so provided.

(c) To provide facilities and services for the operation and use of gliders and other aircraft; the refreshment, convenience, accommodation, of pilots and other persons connected with or interested in flying and the maintenance, repair, construction, servicing, fuelling, storage, and the handling of gliders, other aircraft and auxiliary equipment.

4. MEMBERSHIP: Any gliding, soaring, power flying club being a duly incorporated society, may apply for membership of the Association.
